The heat is on!

Back in 2008 we drew a line on the sand at Gillespie Beach on New Zealand’s West Coast. We were hopeful that human-induced carbon emissions would decline. Tragically this is not the case.

Emissions have continued to rise, along with sea level. The Fox and Franz Joseph glaciers, famous for being visible from the coast, are receding faster than ever due to human-induced global heating.

Beach Stone Line, 2008

Last week we returned to Gillespie Beach and made this sculpture below, looking out to the ocean.

Head and Heart Gillespie Beach, 2023

This time we used sea worn rocks to make a work about the human predicament and the ecological disaster we are creating.

The sea is now five degrees warmer than normal, affecting the whole marine ecosystem including killing off the kelp. How much more heat will it take to turn our hearts and minds to the most important task on Earth - transforming our model of progress to become regenerative like all other life on the planet.
