Entropy

Entropy #1 Lake Wanaka, New Zealand

Working on a new series of work while exploring Lake Wanaka by kayak we have intimate encounters with hidden beaches and coves that provide a rich source of materials and ideas.

Looking closely in the course sand we found small shards of broken glass worn smooth by constant abrasion, becoming opaque until held up to the sunlight when they sparkle with iridescent colour.

I am interested in the water worn elements that are in the process of entropy - logs, rocks, roots and detritus that nature has affected by chance and randomness.

This glass was made from sand and is returning to sand after being used as bottles and discarded. Nature is recycling it. Entropy dictates that everything wears down eventually, nothing is exempt from the second law of thermodynamics.
